Delivering all the drama and elegance you want from a country house wedding, Bovey Castle in Devon is a dazzling place.
I’ve had the chance to be a Bovey Castle wedding photographer many times and it is an amazing wedding venue that doesn’t disappoint
Lying in the midst of the picturesque green valleys and moors of Dartmoor National Park, Bovey Castle’s beautiful stone exterior is accompanied by sublime architectural features, stunning grounds and breathtaking views.
It is a stunning place to shoot a wedding and a phenomenal venue for weddings both large and small. Although the hotel can be hired for your exclusive use, the staff here are absolutely lovely and accommodate all sizes of weddings – no matter how small.
Built-in 1906, Bovey Castle has won many awards and has long been a top destination in Devon. The former aristocratic home is now a 5-star hotel with a divine combination of lavish period interiors, plush décor, striking wedding spaces and great service.
This is a really lovely hotel with loads of great facilities to enjoy, including a gorgeous spa complex, so you and your guests may well want to stay a few nights.
18 of my favourite images from as a Bovey Castle wedding photographer
One of the best decisions of our wedding day! Paul photographed our wedding day brilliantly and captured all the pivotal moments (and more).
He photographed the wedding in such a professional manner that you almost forgot he was there. All photos are of great quality with a great mixture of natural (documentary style photographs) and posed images.
In addition, he sent across a small selection of pictures the night of our wedding which was a very nice touch, as it meant we had some pictures to post on our socials the very next morning. Overall, would highly reccomend!

Sublime castle setting in Devon
Elaborately constructed in a Neo-Elizabethan style, grade II-listed Bovey Castle has lots of incredible places to shoot both inside and out.
Some of Bovey’s architectural features are considered to be the best in the country so you’ll find plenty of columns, balconies, parapets and grand embellishments to enjoy. There are also landscaped gardens, a deer park, woodland and waterways sprinkled across the site’s 275 acres of grounds, plus Dartmoor National Park which borders its edges.
Inside the mix of period and contemporary decor is exquisite with grand Jacobean-style mahogany staircases, oak-panelled walls, dramatic open fireplaces, resplendent plasterwork, vaulted ceilings, huge mullioned windows and plush decor.
It’s a sensational wedding venue, one of the best in the best in Cornwall – Devon area and such a treat whenever I’m asked to be a Bovey Castle wedding photographer.
The castle is located close to Cornwall in North Bovey, just off the A30 and A38 so easy to get to from Torquay, Exmouth, Plymouth and Cornwall.
Stunning Bovey Castle wedding photography
On arrival, you’ll be greeted by a huge expanse of croquet lawn, topped by the castle’s pretty stone facade.
There are many different places, both inside and out, where wedding ceremonies of all sizes can take place.
The striking Cathedral Room is a favourite choice for wedding ceremonies inside the castle whilst the Adam Room or the Library are nice alternatives if you want something smaller.
The Cathedral Room is a grand and atmospheric setting with wood-panelled walls, rows of tall mullioned windows, really high ceilings, and a minstrel’s gallery.
Bovey Hotel and Spa has lots of terraces from where you can soak in the views across the grounds and the Cathedral Room opens up onto one of its best – the South Terrace.
The smaller Adam Room or the Library includes many of the same, beautiful period features as the Cathedral Room but in smaller doses. In both rooms there you’ll find elegant mullioned windows with gorgeous views, wood panelling, statement fireplaces, and plenty of lavish period adornments on display.
The Summerhouse or the intimate Portico are both popular locations for outdoor ceremonies at Bovey. Located on the South Terrace, the Portico is backed by beautiful views across the endless open moors, unbeatable on a glorious day when topped by blue skies.
Meanwhile, the pretty wooden Summerhouse, fronted by a clipped green lawn and flower-filled borders on either side is a perfect setting for a wedding in the grounds.
Historic Devon wedding venue on the Cornish border
Bovey Castle’s historic Great Western restaurant has long been a destination for delicious fine dining in luxe surroundings. You can look forward to mouthwatering gourmet cuisine, great service, and the opportunity to create your own bespoke wedding breakfast menu.
All of Bovey’s dining spaces are decorated in a glam, tasteful style – perfect for the setting.
The Great Western’s Art Deco decor is a highlight of the hotel whilst The Bovey Room and The Mulberry Room offer alternatives for smaller guest lists in equally lavish settings.
Wedding receptions take place in the Dartmoor Suite across from the castle, this modern function suite is kitted out with all you need for the evening including a bar, dancefloor, and toilets.
Bovey is an amazing wedding venue with loads to offer so if you and your loved ones feel like staying on, there are lots to do and see both in the area and on-site.
The hotel has tons of activities for loved ones of all ages to enjoy, ranging from its top 18-hole championship golf course to tennis, sloe gin-making, falconry, woodland walks, volleyball, a children’s club, 4×4 off-roading, and more.
The Elan Spa offers spa treatments, relaxing pools, a steam room, Jacuzzi, a sauna, and more.
Beyond all that the hotel offers, there is plenty to explore in the local area and the many historic towns that surround it.
Accommodation here is as luxurious as the wedding spaces. There are 59 beautifully decorated rooms as well as 22 three-storey country lodges. The lodges can sleep up to eight and are self-catering so ideal for groups of friends and family that want to room together.
Bovey Hotel and Spa have no minimum guest list but it does have a maximum capacity of 130.
Singing waiters at Bovey Castle
Having singing waiters at your wedding will definitely shock your wedding guest and something that they will never forget. They’ll be serving you your starters and topping up your glass one minute and serenading you with show tunes the next, it’s pretty surreal and will definitely leave your wedding breakfast on a high getting them in the mood for dancing in the evening.
