But if you are planning a wedding proposal here, especially if it’s your first visit, there are a few key things you will want to know to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Planning is everything, especially because the mobile signal is very poor the moment you leave the National Trust car park. If you are meeting a photographer, coordinating with family, or just relying on your phone for timings, it is best to have everything planned and saved in advance. As soon as you head down to the beach or dunes, you are unlikely to get any reception at all.
When to Visit
Holywell Bay has no official opening times, so you can visit any time. However, for proposals, early mornings or 1-2hours before sunset. Midday often brings crowds, especially in summer, and the overhead light can be quite harsh in photographs. The soft, golden tones of the morning or the warm glow just before sunset offer the most flattering conditions and a more peaceful atmosphere.
Where to Park
There are two main parking options at Holywell Bay. The Holywell Bay National Trust car park is the most reliable and spacious, offering easy access to the beach and dunes. It costs around £5 for four hours and is free to National Trust members. This should always be your first choice, especially in peak season.
The second option is the Holywell Bay pub car park, which has around 30ish spaces and is monitored by ANPR cameras. If you are even slightly late returning, you risk getting a fine — so only use this option if you are confident about timings and have checked their rules in advance.
What to Bring
Footwear is important. If you are exploring the dunes or clifftop paths, wear something sturdy with good grip. Bring a light blanket if you plan to sit on the sand, and dress in layers; coastal wind can make even a warm day feel cool. A small celebratory drink or picnic adds a thoughtful touch, but avoid anything bulky or hard to carry, especially if walking far from the car park.

Many couples who choose to get engaged at Treyarnon find themselves drawn back to the area again and again — whether for anniversary trips, vow renewals or even weddings nearby. At high tide, however, much of the space disappears, and the sea pushes right up towards the dunes, leaving very little room to move or settle in. Checking tide times in advance is essential, especially if you’re planning a specific time or want to capture certain visuals.
