Pendennis Castle, Falmouth

Pendennis Castle wedding photographer

Pendennis Castle is one of the most stunning locations in Falmouth for a wedding. The castle guards the entrance to the Carrick Roads along with St Mawes castle on the other side of the Fal Estuary. Pendennis Castle is located high up on Pendennis point which means that wherever you are in the grounds of the castle you are met with beautiful views of the Carrick Roads, Falmouth’s beaches and the town itself.

Pendennis Castle has a fascinating history. It was constructed by Henry VIII in 1540 and is the end of a chain of castles built by him along the south coast. This was a result  of his divorce from his Catholic wife, Catherine of Aragon. It left him threatened with war from France and Spain. With over 400 years of defending Britain’s coasts from the Tudor period through the English Civil War and both World Wars, the castle was periodically up-graded, including the installation of new and powerful guns.

On entering the castle you walk under a stone arched bridge which is an ideal place for photographs. The civil ceremony takes place in the Lower Gun room within the castle’s keep. This room is lit generally by candle light and fairy lights around the columns which can look amazing when set out of focus. After the ceremony you have exclusive access to the castles chemise to enjoy a glass of bubbly with family and friends. This gives you a great opportunity to have either the sea views or Pendennis Castle in the background of your wedding photographs. The wedding reception can be enjoyed in the barracks or you may choose to have a marquee placed in the grounds of the castle and enjoy the view particularly at night when lit is illuminated.

Here is a selection of personal favourites from weddings I have photographed at Pendennis Castle.
